The Torture Round of Golf

We all had that round before.  That round of golf where 18 holes seem like 80.  The time goes by slow, and the hole that normally takes you 4 shots to finish now take 8.  I experienced that round today.

I was on a hot streak lately, shooting comfortably in the 80s for the past 3 months (about 10 rounds).  I was feeling invisible thought that I've finally reached golf at a higher level.  I could call myself a mid-handicapper.

Then the magical round happened today.  I teed off with my driver and hit a grounder to the left, something I haven't done in 2 years.  The ball landed close to the left tree line, and in an attempt to chip it out, I totally pulled it (yes, I pulled a chip shot) into the trees.  Then I did it again on the third shot and I ended up losing the ball!  After more hackery, I shot a 12.  I shot a 12 on a par 5, which I don't remember ever shooting!

Although that was the only hole where I shot a double digit score, it was more of the same for 17 more holes.  I was actually ready to leave on the 10 hole.  I told my wife "I want to go home", but she did the right thing and convinced me to tough it out.

I was disappointed about my round.  But thinking back, I could have done better.  I should have done better.  By the 6th hole, I've given up.  I wasn't focusing at all and was just hitting the ball so it will advance down the fairway.  It didn't matter where it was going, it didn't matter how many strokes I took and it certainly didn't matter how many balls I lost.

I should be slapped.  I'm out on the golf course and instead of enjoying quality time with my wife, I probably made her feel bad too.  I can't always control how good I'm hitting the ball that day but what i can control is the the effort I give.  I should try my best to shoot my best score every single time I go out.  I won't give up and I won't want to go home before the 18 holes are over ever again.

I promise.

  1. I feel your pain!! The last round I played the ONLY club I could hit was my driver. I couldn’t hit any irons, especially my pitching wedge. It gets embarrassing when you are only 110 yards out and it takes you 3 shots with a PW to get there.

Hopefully your next round is the best of the season.

  2. Beau71: I hope so too! Next time you have trouble 110 yards out, I suggest using your putter :) You might be able to cut those 3 shots into 2 :D

  3. Been there, done that. This is why golf courses sell beer. I’m a firm believer that even if you don’t feel like drinking, you should have some beers in a cooler…just in case.

  4. I think that giving it you best effort at whatever the endeavor, sports, business, parenting, etc. is the only way to go. I’m not one to do things halfway or I’d be disappointed with myself.
BTW, I wanted to extend and invitation to participate in the weekly blog carnival that I host on Athletic Alley! If you follow the backlink, you will see the blog carnival in the right hand column. It could definitely provide more exposure for your site and the sport (or sports) you love.

  5. Jim: Good point :) I will keep that in mind!!!

Rich: Thanks for the invite! I will check it out.

  6. You know, I have enjoyed reading your post for some time now. I feel your pain. I think I can play too. lol

Hmmm….. not sure about that. But I certainly have learned plenty. Great post :)

  7. Laura: Thanks! I think we all have those days where we can’t play :) “There’s always tomorrow” as they all say!

  8. Hi, Just thought I’d let you recognize your blog is rendering funny in my K-melleon browser. Looks good from what I can see though.
