The Difference Between a Good and Bad Golf Round

Many of us were lucky enough to have that magical golf round before. The day when we couldn't hit the ball off line. It seems like the game is just too easy that day. All we have to do is swing and the ball magically goes into the hole.
The fairways are wide, the greens are generous and the hole is huge. When we tee up, we just know where to aim. When we aim in the wrong place, it would seem that the ball will magically curve back to the fairway.
I had a round like that once. Actually, the only round where I shot less than 40 on the front 9 (my score was 39). I even aimed at the wrong green on one hole, where I sliced it back to the right green! To say that I was lucky that day was an understatement. On the 9th green, I actually had a chance to shoot 37 but when I found out about it, I 3-putted.
The back 9 wasn't that good but my final score was still amazing. I was happy that day. Very happy. I felt like I could play professional. I felt invisible but it was short lived.
A couple rounds later, I was back to my old self. I couldn't hit the ball if my life was dependent on it. Topping, slicing, duffing was back to my shot selection. No longer am I hitting the ball solidly. I was pulling it and at times slicing it. I didn't even know where to aim anymore. I was unsure. Unsure how to approach the ball, unsure how to line up for my putt and unsure how to play the game.
I wonder what happened. I know I will get it back someday. I know I will figure out what the difference was and I will let you know.
My idea of the “perfect round” is a bit more, uh, liberal than yours. I used to play a heck of a lot of golf, but I never was that great at it. My idea of a good round, then, was breaking 100.
Ah, but there was one day I broke 90. And found $5 in the woods, to boot.
Pretty good day…
What Ethan had seemed like a pretty nice round
I liked mine too. It was the first time I broke 100. I was on a crappy course playing with people I didn’t know but it didn’t matter. I was happy and I will always remember that day. It was one good day and round!
I once had a ball flying into a pond but instead of plucking in, it skid three times on the surface before it land on the edge of the pond. Safe ball !
Definitely a fluke.
Ethan: That was a great day! Breaking 90 is no easy feat and you found $5 to buy golf balls!
Calvin: I remember the day I broke 100 too
It was sweet!
Blog Tactic: Hehe that must’ve been fun to watch. If you ever want to see people try to do it on purpose, there is a competition at the Master’s where a couple pros try to do this.
We love it when the game is going good but hate it when the game is going bad.
Last round for me was bad but there is alwas tomorrow right?
That’s funny about aiming for the wrong green….and having it end in your favor! I am hoping to break 90, then I will be able to tell the difference between a good and bad golf day.
Is there such a thing as a “bad” round of golf?
I had a competition round about 20 years ago and scored a 3 over par 75 gross off a 12 handicap. I gave up the game a year later, and for 19 years only played rarely. I took up the game again around a year ago, and my lowest round to date in a compeition is 10 over gross. I still remember that day now, I felt unbelievably calm, and could hardly feel the ball on the club. After 14 holes I was level par and drove into the bunker on the 15th fairway, the bunker hadnt been raked and I had a terrible lie, proceeding to triple bogey the long par 4. I then somehow continued to par my way in, but havent quite repeated that round, yet !
I really believe that mind state plays a massive part to the game. Top golfers are Jedis too !
