Kenny Perry Falls in the Playoff of the 2008 John Deere Classic and then Wins

Winner of 2008 John Deere Classic

Being the only experienced winner in contention by Sunday at the 2008 John Deere Classic, Kenny Perry was able to shoot a 1 under par final round to finish -16 and tie for a playoff where he then went on to win.

It was a slow start for Kenny Perry as he bogied the 3rd hole to fall back to 14 under par.  However, as he played more, he settled down and played much better.  He then birded the par 4 6th, the par 5 10th, and the par 4 14th and was looking good to go back to the winner's circle for the 3rd time this year.

On the 16th, he hit his tee shot to the light rough around the green and then surprisingly mishit the 25 feet chip to 15 feet past the cup.  Then as a good player, he drains the par putt to keep the momentum going.

Kenny did make it interesting when he was in the middle of the 18th fairway and miss the green and into the right rough. He then hit another chip shot way too hard and into the left rough. He had to chip it in to stay at 17 under and he chunks the chip shot. On his 5 feet par putt, he made it to fall back to 16 under par and tie for a playoff!

What's in The Bag of Kenny Perry

On the first hole of the playoff, everyone just hit their iron approaches into the water, paving way for Kenny Perry to put a safe shot onto the green to win the 2008 John Deere Classic.

  1. Great timely post! I’m surprised Kenny choked like this but that just shows how hard golf is! I’m excited to see the playoff!!

  2. Oh man that was stupid. Everyone just hits their iron shots into the water. Looks like Kenny is going to win the tournament.

  3. Richard: I updated the post to reflect this but I agree. It would be much more interesting if the playoff was with high caliber players. Everyone (including Kenny) choked but Kenny choked the least to win at the end.

  4. Glad to see him win it. He has always been on the fringe(no pun intended). He is pretty streaky though but a win is a win.

  5. Rick: Kenny’s definitely streaky. He also seems to play the middle part of the season well. I guess now that he’s won 3 times in year already, there’s no need for him to be scared of not making the Ryder Cup.

It’s also interesting that he’s skipping the British Open though. I guess it’s more about responsibilities and money than passion about the game. What I mean is that if he grew up dreaming up playing and winning at golf tournaments, he would never skip any of the majors.
