Focus on the Golf Course to Lower Your Score

Golfers are seldom focused during the round these days.  They talk on cell phones, check emails, chase the animals and even bring beer.  When they address the ball, they think about what whether they have the right club, all the tips that they've read on the web and what to eat for dinner.  Then after they hit the shot, they are upset because they wanted the result to be something better.

No wonder the scores haven't improved for the last 20 years with all the equipment enhancements we've seen.

Here's one little tip.  Leave your life in the car when you arrive in the parking lot of the golf course! You play golf to relax, to have fun and you certainly didn't pay the green fee to check your emails.  By leaving everything behind and just play, you remove many of the thoughts that prevent you from swinging freely.

Next, keep just one swing thought and push all the other tips that you've read in magazines out of your mind.  Concentrate on the target, swing away and the results will be much better.  By not thinking too much and complicating things, you will feel better and also more relaxed!

The key is to eliminate all the distractions and just go play.  Try it next time you are out golfing.  Turn off that cell phone and enjoy the scenery.  I bet you will be more focused and play better.

  1. Another great one :) I see people check their cell phones all the time. It’s really quite annoying!

  2. I finally decided to write a comment on your blog. I just wanted to say good job. I really enjoy reading your posts.

  3. Talking on the cell phone is dangerous on the golf course. You tend to tune out everyone yelling fore etc.

I agree with the author here. Leave those things in the car and go play the game!

  4. You have a great blog, and this was a very good post. I used to golf a lot, especially when I lived in Orange County. Been up here in Chico for ten years now, but I’m sure your site is very helpful for lots of OC golfers.

    peace,

  5. Dicky: I’ve seen someone almost got hit once talking on his cell phone. I don’t think he’s going to do that anymore.

Mike: Thanks :) Even though this blog is about golf in OC, you can probably find many articles that are not just OC specific so come back more often and let me know if there’s anything in specific you’d like me to cover!

  6. I definitely agree with you on the point of leaving life in the car. Golf should be fun and not stressful. Besides fun, we need to respect the game too; what’s with the phone and email. Golf is a game that needs focus and concentration like any sports.

  7. I agree with tuning out everything else and just focusing on the game. I can’t understand how people expect to concentrate with the distraction of a mobile phone! I find it hard to concentrate when too many golf tips are swirling around my head. It’s good to “forget” everything and then when the time comes to use a particular shot that you have read about, your mind is clearer to access that information.

  8. Honestly, it starts with practice if you truly practice the way you play. If your yuckin it up with the dude at the driving range most likely that is what you need to do if your playing. Look at Trevino nobody could shut that guy up for 72 holes.
